It’s a secret that until recently was known only to film crews: The best place in South America to see wildlife is not the Amazon but the Pantanal, a wetland the size of France on the far western edge of Brazil that bursts with animals. This area is an unparalleled wildlife sanctuary of spectacular beauty, an ecological paradise containing hundreds of species of birds, thousands of varieties of butterflies, myriads of brightly colored flowers, and shoals of fish. Capuchin and Howler monkeys, capybaras, toucans, anacondas, caimans and tapirs help create an aquatic and sylvan theater of sights and sounds. The endangered jaguar, and increasingly rare Hyacinth macaws and giant river otters, all make their home in the Pantanal.
Best time for Wildlife viewing in Pantanal:
As this area lacks the dense foliage of the Amazon, the animals are much easier to spot. During the dry season (from May to October) there is a high concentration of animals around the lakes and lagoons, which makes it easier to spot them. Fish get trapped in these pools, and birds and mammals gather for water and food as they wait for the rains to start. During the wet season (from October to May) the Pantanal becomes a wetland, millions of birds are attracted by this aquatic paradise, as mammals take refuge on the remaining few mounds of dry land. The wildlife becomes more spread out, but it also allows for various canoe and boat trips that can bring you very close to the wildlife.
