Bonito is a tiny town in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, that has turned itself into a prime eco-tourism destination. What people come for are the rivers and numerous streams that bubble up from the substrate of limestone rock that are so free of impurities that you get the kind of crystal-clear visibility normally found only in tropical oceans. You can see 80-100 ft. in these fast-flowing rivers, and they are full of freshwater fish, such as dourado and pintado, not to mention the occasional anaconda. Countless waterfalls and lakes, over 80 dry and flooded caves, and endless species of fish and other wild animals are some of the attractions of Bonito area. The main activity is certainly diving and snorkeling. Light rafting, abseiling, horseback riding, caving, mountain biking and trekking are just some of the other fun things to do here.

One of the most famous attractions of the Bonito area is Gruta do Lago Azul, the Blue Lake Cave, impressive because of its geological formations and its bright blue-colored waters. Another ‘must-see’ here is “The Macaws’ Sinkhole”, a giant crater-like formation covered with lush tropical vegetation that wild Red macaws call home.

The government of the region is strictly controlling the numbers of tourists allowed to visit sites each day. These limitations are aimed at preserving the rich natural beauty of the area, maintaining popular tourist sites as close as possible to their natural state.
